December 20th, 2024 - Fibreglass Work by Infamous Aero Company

While on Instagram one day in early spring, I saw a few posts from Lift King, a local company that puts on a weekly show and shine called Wild Wednesday in the summer time. They have a series of replica cars from the Fast and Furious movie franchise and one of them, an RX-7, was having a fibreglass body kit fitted before the upcoming car show season.

The company fitting the fibreglass kit was called Infamous Aero, a local shop in Calgary. When I had the CR-X on the road again this past summer I stopped in to visit them and see if they could help me with the rear bumper repair as well as properly fitting the front bumper.

As the summer season was winding down, we kept in touch, and near the end of November they had an opening to the work for me.

I gave them my budget amount, and they said that they'd do their best to address as much as possible with the hours they had to work with. In that time, the Infamous team were able to repair the work the previous owner of the bumper did: using bondo to patch an issue with the fibreglass. There was spiderweb cracks all along the bumper, which they were able to address with a dremel and a drill to ensure they wouldn't continue cracking.

They corrected a couple small issues on the car itself on the driver's side rear which was causing some alignment issues, and made sure that the rear bumper was straight and aligned properly when installed.

The front bumper needed far more work. They began with the alignment and then moved along to the installation of the fog lights, where they had to create a couple of new brackets; an additional cost but I had set aside a contingency for these little things that I knew would pop up. They fixed a few of my amateur mistakes as well as some cracking at weak spots on the corners. The front passenger corner has had some sort of impact at some point over the car's lifetime and it took some additional massaging to get the bumper to fit correctly there which also added a little bit to the budget.

I'm extremely happy with the work and the total amount of the bill. Ended up about using about $600 in contingency and the fitment is amazing. There's still some things I would like them to tweak up for me on the front bumper alignment, but considering the budget they had to work with and time constraints, they did so many amazing things. And I haven't even touched on their customer service yet.

This shop is made up of a bunch of car enthusiasts, first and foremost. They have a cool collection of cars among the folks there and they appreciate the Japanese marques. I've spoken about the poor service I've gotten at various shops over the years on this blog. I think that maybe over the years the attitudes have begun to shift when it comes to working on these older Hondas, and Japanese cars in general. This was the most comfortable I've ever felt leaving my CR-X at a shop.

The team at Infamous Aero understands the car enthusiast mindset and is great to work with, taking the utmost care and attention to detail that comes from working closely with their like-minded clientele. They kept me updated every couple of days, not only on the progress of the car, but the budget used/remaining. We discussed the goals of the project and worked with me to achieve the goals we outlined at the beginning.

Speaking of great experiences with local Calgary businesses, I would be remiss if I didn't talk about Low Tow Pro, in Calgary Alberta. They came to pick up and take my baby to and from Infamous Auto and I couldn't be happier with the service as well as the level of care they took with my car. They treated my little 35 year old Japanese grocery-getter like it was a $300,000 Porsche 911 GT3. He took his time to line it up perfectly in his trailer and even stopped along the way to check the straps after we drove through some bumpy, snowy roads on the way out of my neighborhood. Once again, the most comfortable I've ever been while having my CR-X transported.
