Honda LHD Adjustable Headlights (using rear housing from RHD Non-Adjustable Headlights)
- The original plastic JDM CR-X headlights were designed for LHT (Left-Hand-Traffic) patterns, and are incompatible with RHT (Right-Hand-Traffic) patterns in North America.
- Swapped the JDM units for LHD glass headlights from a European VT (EE8), but the adjuster motor fitted to the back makes them incompatible with front bulkhead on EF8 CR-X without modification.
- RHD Non-Adjustable glass headlight rear housing was then mated to the LHD glass for proper beam orientation in Canada's right-hand-traffic roads and legal requirements. (Note: JDM plastic headlight rear housing incompatible with the glass lens housings)
- In addition, the new glass headlights are H4 bulb compatible, readily available in North America, instead of H4H bulb used in JDM headlights and found only in Japan.
- The LHD headlight glass currently in use is on my CR-X is marked with ECE code "E4" for the Netherlands. Additional marking HC/R signifies low and high (dip and main) beam headlamp with low and high beams not to be operated simultaneously, Class-B (usually halogen).
Daniel Stern Lighting: ECE/EEC Marking - Headlamp Suitability for Traffic Direction
https://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/lights/codes/codes.html
https://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/lights/codes/codes.html
"A headlamp intended for use in traffic that flows on the right side of the road must never be used on the left side of the road, nor must a left-traffic headlamp ever be used on the right side of the road. A wrong-side-of-road headlamp does not provide adequate illumination for the driver to see what he needs to see in order to drive safely, and severely blinds oncoming traffic. This cannot be corrected by adjusting the aim of the lamp, because traffic-handedness is intrinsic in the optics of the lamp. This means it is very unsafe to use UK-spec, Australian-spec, or Japanese-spec ("JDM") headlamps in the United States, Canada, Continental Europe or any other location that drives on the right side of the road."
Here is how to read ECE traffic-direction markings:
- → Low beam is suitable only for use in Left Hand Traffic (e.g., Britain, Australia, Africa, Japan)
- [NO ARROW] Low beam is suitable only for use in Right Hand Traffic (US, Canada, Continental Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, etc.)
- ↔ Low beam is adaptable for use on either side of the road (many projector lamps and older reflector high/low lamps)
