May 6th, 2020 - 15 Years
Sometimes it's easy to forget just how much time passes, and then a date appears on the calendar and it hits you like a truck. Distracted by the Covid-19 pandemic, I never noticed until today, but it's been 15 years to the day that my CR-X was delivered to me here in Calgary after its journey to North America from Japan.
I've written about the arrival of my CR-X earlier in this blog, so I won't bore you with the story again, but I have dug up some facts about my CR-X that I found rather interesting:
- She spent a total of 5689 days in Japan, from the time she was built, until the day she boarded the vehicle transport ship.
- As of May 6th, 2020, she will have been in Canada for 5498 days.
- On the day my car was sold, September 28, 1989, my car with the options it is equipped with retailed for approximately 2,020,700¥ in Japan.
- Using the exchange rate for that same day, 2,020,700¥ works out to $16,893 Canadian dollars or $14,314 US dollars.
- Adjusted for inflation, in 2020 that would be $26,566 Canadian dollars, or $29,796 US dollars.
- Using the current Exchange rate of 1 JPY = 0.0132324 CAD, that same 2,020,700¥ my CR-X sold for would be $26,738.61
- In 2005 I paid $7500 CAD, or approximately $5900 USD for my CR-X, landed.

- Although it may not look like it since I have a lot more to do, I have spent approximately $14,000 CAD worth of parts and labor into her, not counting spare parts in my garage waiting to be installed.
- Including the purchase price, that's close to $21,500 CAD.
There's been a lot of ups and downs over the past 15 years, and my build hasn't always gone the way I'd planned - or at the speed I'd hoped. It's taken a back seat (pardon the pun) in my life more times than I'd care to remember. At the same time, I've also grown more patient as I've gotten older. Nowadays, fifteen years after she came into my life, I'm seeing this build as a marathon instead of a sprint.
I'll get it finished one day. In my own time, and in my own way.
